Comedian and social media influencer Chebet Ronoh is in the trends after comments she made about marriage sparked heated debate on the internet.

In one of her latest posts, Ronoh used the phrase “marriage hubamba mafala” loosely interpreted to translate as “marriage entertains the ignorant,” many Kenyans bellowed over what they felt was an innocuous choice of words and their intended meaning.

Ronoh came out to set the record straight, providing a detailed explanation on her Instagram stories. To her, the Swahili word fala doesn’t mean “foolish” as everyone got it, but rather “ignorant.” She continued to further distinguish between fala (ignorant), mpumbavu (foolish), and mjinga (stupid).

She opined that for a marriage to work, it always requires a combination of two opposite attitudes. “Honestly, to survive the marriage needs one foolish and another ignorant so that it can be successful. Two foolish/ignorant cannot work, two wise people cannot, one wise and one foolish/ignorant that too cannot,” she further added.

Her comments suggested that wisdom allows one to look at ignorance, but then also said that true marriage, as she knew it, was not merely a man-made institution but was indeed ordained by God.
