Kakrao Technical and Vocational College (TVC) has opened a cleanup campaign in Migori town to mark World Cleanup Month, which includes a focus on raising awareness on the recycling of textile waste and promoting circular fashion.
TVC Principal Barclays Odhiambo, while addressing the occasion, pleaded with the textile factories to reconfigure the way they handle wardrobe waste. He went on to say that recycling should be embraced not only as an environmental practice but also as an economic one.
Odhiambo disclosed that Kenya is a country that generates about two million tonnes of synthetic waste annually. Just about 50% of this waste is left in landfills while the rest is recycled or reused.
He added that if rags are recycled in the right way, not only can this be good news for the environment but also for the people’s incomes and poverty eradication. The cleanup was an event that involved students, staff, and some locals present.
It is one of the college’s initiatives, with a greater commitment to the promotion of environmental and waste management practices.
