Only hours after President William Ruto commissioned the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, Kenya Railways has released the details of how the new rail link between the SGR terminus and city centre will work.

The passengers will pay Ksh50 for the brief ride linking Mombasa Terminus, Miritini and the old railway station in the CBD.

The schedule has been designed to coincide with the arrival and departure of the Madaraka Express trains from Nairobi. There will be nine trips per day  five into town and four to the terminus, says Kenya Railways.

The first train of the morning will leave the terminus at 4:10am, just minutes after the 4:00am SGR from Nairobi. It will make a brief stop at Miritini before arriving in the CBD at 4:45am.

Other significant connections are the 7:20am for early morning travelers, the 2:25pm service for passengers arriving on the afternoon express, and the late evening connection at 9:00pm.

For outbound passengers, CBD-bound trains will directly connect to outbound SGR trips.

To catch the 8:00am express to Nairobi, commuters will be able to use the 6:25am connecting train, getting to the terminus by 7:00am. The same connections have been booked for the 3:00pm, 7:00pm and 10:00pm departures.

Kenya Railways states the new service will lower transportation costs, ease Mombasa roads congestion and offer commuters a smooth interchange between the SGR and city center.
