National women’s rugby sevens team coach Dennis Mwanja has been suspended for two weeks pending an investigation into a safeguarding incident involving the team.

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) confirmed the suspension in a statement issued Friday, noting that the decision followed a recommendation by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

“The investigating officers from the State Department of Sports have recommended the suspension to enable investigations to be conducted fairly and transparently, respecting the rights of both Mr. Mwanja and the alleged victim,” KRU stated.

The Union reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and player safety, emphasizing that it will not protect any individual found to have breached these values.

“The Board of the Kenya Rugby Union wants to make it clear that it will not shield any individual whose actions violate the trust and well-being of our players,” the statement read.

Mwanja, popularly known as ‘Ironman’, also serves as the head coach of KCB Rugby. He has temporarily stepped aside from his duties at the club as the investigation proceeds.

In a brief statement, KCB Rugby announced that former Kenya Sevens captain Andrew Amonde will take over in an interim capacity.

Mwanja was appointed head coach of the Lionesses in 2022.
