Television and radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has sparked controversy on social media after his questioning of Kenyans’ reaction during Tanzanian artiste Zuchu’s performance at Kasarani Stadium.
As Zuchu sang in front of the audience, a section of it sang along, singing the Kenyan National Anthem, a thing that Mwakideu termed as double standard.
Moving to social media, he added that although Kenyans profess love for their own music in public, their actions on social media tell a different story. On social platforms like YouTube, Tanzanian Bongo music is always leading the charts, but Kenyan artists do not get the same streaming numbers.
“Why sing the National Anthem during a concert and then go on and stream Bongo songs at home?” Mwakideu asked, condemning them for double standards.
His statements have ignited a fiery debate. Some Kenyans admit, acknowledging that they prefer Tanzanian hits to those produced locally because of better production and advertisement. Others, however, felt that Mwakideu’s claim was unfair, arguing that patriotism and musical preference are separate issues.
