The government has embarked on the construction of more than 170,000 student accommodation units across Kenya in a bid to provide secure, affordable, and accessible housing for learners and boost academic performance.

In Homa Bay, the State yesterday broke ground for the Tom Mboya University Students’ Village — a 588-unit hostel complex set to host over 2,000 students. The project marks the first student housing development under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

Authorities say the initiative will not only address the acute shortage of campus accommodation but also create employment, with the Homa Bay project alone expected to generate more than 1,500 jobs during its construction phase.

Officials added that the nationwide rollout will prioritise proximity to learning institutions, safety, and modern amenities to create a conducive environment for academic success.
