At least 80 people have lost their lives in road accidents across the country in the past four days, the Ministry of Roads and Transport has revealed, raising fresh concerns over road safety.

Crash data indicates a total of 2,933 fatalities have been reported between January and August 10, 2025. Unfortunately, 80 occurred over the past four days.

Following the surge in crashes, involving public service, private, and commercial vehicles, officials from various agencies are conducting safety audits along high-risk road segments.

The exercise, expected to be completed within seven days, will assess safety deficiencies and reconstruct accident scenes to inform technical recommendations aimed at reducing fatalities.

“As a Ministry, we will continue working with all stakeholders to implement both long and medium-term measures provided in Kenya’s National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 within the available resources,” said Davis Chirchir, CS for Roads and Transport

However, the CS said efforts to strengthen road safety legislation in the regulation of school transport, operations of commercial vehicles, drink driving, inspection of motor vehicles, roadside stations and review of the Traffic Act are at advanced stages.

He cited the government’s effort to address infrastructure challenges, such as the redesigning of the Nithi Bridge, the dualling of the Rironi-Mau Summit Road, which are also on course and completion is expected soon.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will continue to scale up coordination of road safety initiatives, including public education and awareness, to support behaviour and attitude change.

“In support of the government’s efforts, I urge all transport stakeholders, operators, and road users, including drivers, pedestrians, boda boda and cyclists, to prioritise their safety and strictly adhere to road safety guidelines.” he cautioned

Additionally, the CS urges drivers to comply with stipulated speed limits, vehicle maintenance standards, proper licensing, and traffic regulations. Which is not optional but a collective responsibility that safeguards lives.

“Road traffic accidents are not only predictable but also preventable if all road users played their part,” he said, calling for a holistic and collaborative approach to road safety,” he added
