Traffic along Jogoo Road came to a standstill on the morning of Thursday, August 7, after angry boda boda riders set a City Shuttle bus on fire.
The assault came after the bus allegedly hit and killed one passenger.
Eyewitnesses say the passenger was killed on spot by the collision.
Passengers were forced to alight and use other means of transport, while the conductor and his driver waited for police officers to arrive.
However, the situation later became hostile as more boda boda drivers streamed to the scene, and shortly after, they burned down the bus.
Images and videos shared online showed the bus completely burnt out.
One witness took to social media, blaming the delayed response from both the police and fire department.
“A boda boda rider was knocked by a bus. His head was shattered. It took more than an hour for any police or emergency team to get there,” the witness wrote. “The other riders got angry and set the City Shuttle bus on fire. Shockingly, the firefighting team only arrived after everything had already burned.”
This was the second incident in less than 24 hours involving a public service vehicle catching fire.
Earlier, a Super Metro bus went up in flames on Naivasha Road.
The cause of that fire is yet to be established.
At the same time, drivers were already dealing with dense traffic on Jogoo Road and other major roads in the city because of the African Nations Championships (CHAN) matches set for the day.
Nairobi Traffic Police had made earlier announcements to the public of the alterations in traffic flow, requesting drivers to avoid sections of Thika and Mombasa Roads unless going to the stadiums.
At 3 p.m., the Democratic Republic of Congo will face Zambia at Nyayo Stadium, while Harambee Stars will play Angola at Kasarani Stadium from 7 p.m.
