The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering women-led nano, micro, and small-scale enterprises, recognizing them as a critical foundation for sustainable economic transformation and inclusive national prosperity.

Speaking during a meeting with over 5,000 women entrepreneurs from Meru County, government officials emphasized the vital role grassroots businesses play in strengthening the economy, especially when supported alongside medium and large-scale enterprises.

“Women-led businesses, no matter how small, are the engine of true economic growth. Supporting them is not just empowerment—it’s smart economics,” said one of the officials at the event.

The government is currently implementing a program to construct 21 fresh produce markets across all constituencies in Meru County.

The initiative is part of a wider national rollout aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting trade, and dignifying informal businesses operating in open-air and roadside markets.

Additionally, the universal health coverage (UHC) campaign, which includes free outpatient services at government facilities, is expected to improve the welfare of informal traders and reduce the burden of healthcare costs, allowing them to reinvest more into their businesses.
