Three people have died after falling from the upper stands of Algeria’s 5 July Stadium in Algiers, just moments after the final whistle confirmed MC Alger’s league title win, the health ministry has announced.

The tragedy occurred when a security barrier collapsed as fans surged forward in celebration, causing dozens to fall to the lower tier.

According to local media, the packed stadium had erupted in jubilation after MC Alger retained their title.

More than 70 people were injured and taken to three hospitals for treatment, with most now discharged, the health ministry added.

Players and staff from MC Alger have visited hospitals to donate blood for the injured.

The atmosphere during the match was festive, with green flares filling the stadium. However, the planned trophy presentation was postponed following the incident.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

MC Alger secured the championship for the second consecutive year with a 0-0 draw against NC Magra.
