A police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty on Wednesday in Thika Town, sparking a swift response and ongoing manhunt by the National Police Service (NPS).

According to a statement released by the NPS, Police Constable Benard Koome Ithai, aged 32, was fatally shot by a suspected criminal in the Cravers area of Thika. The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

His next of kin have since been notified.”We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this time of profound sorrow,” the statement read.

Following the incident, officers launched immediate investigations in collaboration with members of the public and are actively pursuing critical leads to apprehend the suspect behind the shooting.

The police have also appealed to the public to share any information that may assist in the investigation. Citizens are urged to report to the nearest police station or use the toll-free hotlines: 999, 911, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203).

The NPS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country and vowed to continue pursuing and dismantling criminal networks threatening public safety.
