The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Board has announced sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening rugby structures and improving governance across all levels.

The new leadership is focused on professionalizing the sport, developing young talent, and promoting better accountability.

A key proposal is replacing the long-standing Eric Shirley Shield (ESS) league with a dynamic Under-20 competition involving only Kenya Cup clubs. “This shift aligns with KRU’s development goals and international standards,” said Director Mukabane.

The new league will run alongside Kenya Cup fixtures, allowing each squad to include five over-age players—three of whom can play at a time—for a maximum of three matches, mainly for injury recovery.

Established in 1962, the ESS has been central to Kenya’s rugby scene. However, the KRU believes the new format will better support player development and the sport’s future.

KRU is also finalizing an amended constitution aimed at decentralizing power from the Chairperson’s office to regional leaders. “We’re committed to equity and broader accountability,” the board stated.

Additionally, the Board accepted the resignation of former Chairman Alexander “Sasha” Mutai and thanked him for his service.
