A section of grassroots leaders from Matungulu constituency in Machakos County has raised concerns over attempts by some local politicians to block them from participating in President William Ruto’s upcoming tour of the Ukambani region.
Speaking to the press on Monday, the leaders expressed frustration, claiming that certain political figures uncomfortable with their rising influence were deliberately sidelining them from the planned engagements.
They emphasized that the President is welcome to all corners of the country and called for unity among locals ahead of the Head of State’s visit.“This is not the time for petty divisions or political turf wars. The president’s tour is an opportunity for the region to voice its development needs,” one of the grassroots leaders stated.
The leaders urged residents of Matungulu and the greater Ukambani region to come together and accord President Ruto a warm reception, saying that the visit presents a critical moment to highlight long-standing infrastructural concerns.
Chief among the issues they want prioritized is the construction of the Oldonyo Sabuk Bridge, which they described as catastrophic due to its deteriorating condition and safety risks to the public.“We are petitioning for the Oldonyo Sabuk Bridge project to be top of the agenda during the president’s visit. The bridge is a lifeline for thousands, and its poor state continues to endanger lives and hinder economic activity,” another leader said.
The group called on government officials and organizers of the Ukambani tour to ensure inclusive participation of all community representatives, regardless of political affiliation.
As preparations continue for the president’s visit, the leaders’ appeal reflects growing grassroots agitation for equitable development and inclusive political engagement in the region.
