Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has spoken about the chaos that erupted at former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) launch in Nairobi.
During the launch on Thursday, May 15, chaos emerged when individuals in plainclothes fired into the air to disperse a crowd that attempted to storm the venue.
Addressing the ugly incident, Murkomen first blamed the event organizers, saying they did not notify the National Police Service (NPS) about the launch as required, thus compromising the safety of the attendees.
The Interior CS said preliminary investigations had implicated Gachagua himself, as the goons were reportedly demanding the money they had been promised to attend the event.
"Preliminary findings suggest Gachagua'ssupporters expected to be paid after the party launch, and when payments were delayed or failed to materialise, a disagreement broke out. That’s when some individuals in plainclothes and armed began shooting in the air,” said Murkomen.
Murkomen said the government was working to identify those responsible and determine their motives, including whether the armed individuals were part of Gachagua’s security team or unauthorised personnel.
