President William Ruto will, on Thursday, August 15, host Team Kenya in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Eldoret State Lodge.

State House Press Secretary Emmanuel Talam said the athletes currently in Nairobi will fly to the reception aboard the president’s aircraft.

They will then embark on a ceremonial drive to the state lodge for breakfast. This will be followed by a grand entry to the Sports Club for the inauguration of the City of Champions.

“Athletes in Nairobi will fly to Eldoret in the president’s aircraft. Ceremonial drive to State Lodge for breakfast and grand entry to Sports Club for the inauguration of the City of Champions,” said Talam.

The team arrived in the country on Tuesday evening, accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

Addressing the press at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Murkomen praised the athletes for their impeccable performance in the competition.

The CS said that the attention now shifts to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the United States of America, emphasising the need to put in more effort to win more medals.

In the Paris edition, team Kenya bagged 11 medals: four gold, two silver and five bronze. This made Kenya emerge top in Africa and 17th globally out of over 180 nations that participated in the 2024 edition.

Faith Kipyegon won a gold in women’s 1500m and a silver in the 5000m. Beatrice Chebet won two golds in the 5000m and 10000m. Emmanuel Wanyonyi won gold in 800m.

Speaking at JKIA, Kipyegon said that her biggest goal in the competition was to defend her 1500m record.

“Let me take this opportunity to say thank you to the Government, Sports Ministry, and NOC-K for the support and for that, we were able to perform. My biggest goal was to defend my country over 1500m,” said Kipyegon.

Double gold medallist Chebet noted that it was her first time competing at the Olympics.

“I want to thank God because we have come a long way. This was my first time. I’m so happy being a double gold medallist and being an Olympic champion. I want to thank the government, NOCK, AK, my family and everyone who supported me at Paris 2024,” she said.
