Kenya Airways has officially announced that it will resume flights to Dzaoudzi (DZA) in Mayotte, starting in May 2023. This marks an important milestone in enhancing air travel connectivity within the Indian Ocean region. The resumption of services comes after a temporary suspension due to significant damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Chido to the island’s airport infrastructure.
In a statement issued on December 31, Kenya Airways highlighted that the restored service will bolster trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Kenya and the French overseas territory of Mayotte, which lies between Madagascar and Mozambique. The airline expressed its commitment to supporting regional ties through increased connectivity.
“We are thrilled to announce that we’re ready to welcome our customers back to Mayotte,” said the airline in a statement. “The temporary suspension of flights was necessary due to the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Chido, and we deeply apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Above all, the safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority.”
In addition, Kenya Airways had earlier resumed flights to Comoros on December 16 after the reopening of the airport there. Despite the resumption of flights in some areas, operations to Mayotte remained on hold as the airline awaited clearance regarding safety standards.
Cyclone Chido, which formed in the Indian Ocean in early December, brought heavy rains, strong winds, and high waves to the region. The storm caused extensive damage in several countries, including Mayotte, Madagascar, Comoros, and northern Mozambique, leading to significant flight disruptions, government advisories, and widespread cancellations across affected regions.
