Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that several multi-billion shilling development projects are underway in Meru County, aimed at improving services and creating jobs at the grassroots.

Speaking on Tuesday at State House, Nairobi, Kindiki said the projects are part of the government’s plan to grow local economies and improve living standards across the country.

One of the key projects is the upgrade of Meru County Referral Hospital into a national referral facility at a cost of Sh1 billion. Once completed, the hospital is expected to offer specialised medical services and reduce the number of patients seeking treatment outside the county.

The government is also rolling out last-mile electricity connections across all constituencies in Meru, with 30,000 households set to be connected to power.

Other ongoing projects include the construction of 17 modern markets, affordable housing developments, and supporting infrastructure that will create thousands of jobs and open up business opportunities.

Kindiki also revealed that work will soon begin on the Sh7 billion Nithi Bridge, which will improve safety along the busy Nairobi–Embu–Chuka–Chogoria–Meru road.

In addition, the government plans to build a Sh3 billion bypass in Meru Town to ease traffic congestion, improve movement and support trade.

The Deputy President spoke after joining President William Ruto in a consultative meeting with Meru leaders at State House. Those present included Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, Deputy Governor Linda Kiome, Senator Kathuri Murungi, 11 Members of Parliament and 67 Members of the County Assembly.

The leaders discussed priority projects and ways to speed up development in the county.

Kindiki said the government is committed to working with local leaders to deliver projects that directly benefit residents.
