Migori: A deadly clash ensued in Nyatike Sub-County between residents and security officers after the fatal shooting of businessman Peter Onyango Midiala.
The shooting, which occurred Thursday night at Osiri Junction, sparked protests as locals expressed anger over the rise in robberies and gun attacks targeting traders. Demonstrators stormed Macalder Police Station, vandalizing property, burning a police vehicle, six officers’ homes, and the Deputy County Commissioner’s office. Police opened fire to disperse the crowd, killing two civilians and injuring over 20 officers, including the Migori County Police Commander, who was airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.
Nyanza Regional Commissioner Florence Mworoa visited the scene and condemned the violence.
“We condemn the violent attack on Macalder Police Station and the destruction of government property. We have commenced investigations into the killing of the businessman as well as the violence that followed; those found responsible will face the full force of the law,” Mworoa said.
She urged residents to surrender illegal firearms and allow authorities to restore order.
Migori County Woman Representative Fatuma Mohammed and Nyatike MP Tom Odege called for calm and emphasized that justice must be pursued through legal channels. Additional security personnel have been deployed to the area as authorities work to restore peace.
