Boniface Kariuki, the 22 year old mask vendor who was shot in the head by police in Nairobi’s CBD on June 17, 2025, has been laid to rest today, in Kangema, Murang’a County.

Kariuki was shot at close range and rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in the Intensive Care Unit for two weeks before being declared brain dead.

Leaders who graced the occasion among them Murang’a governor Irungu Kang’ata, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemned police use of firearms during peaceful protests, calling for justice for Boniface and many others who died in the hands of the police.

Kalonzo Musyoka eulogized Kariuki as a law-abiding and hardworking Kenyan who died from a severe head injury.

They also condemned presidents Ruto’s orders of shoot to maim protesters targeting businesses, saying this will prompt more killings.

The burial comes a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved murder charges against Police Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa over the fatal shooting.
