Several Trapped as Building Collapses in Kibera’s Highrise Area

Several people are feared trapped after a building collapsed in the Highrise area of Kibera, Nairobi, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed the incident and said rescue teams were quickly sent to the scene.

In the latest development, the rescue team says that the structure was currently under construction and at least four individuals had already been rescued and taken to Mbagathi Hospital.

It is not yet known how many individuals remain trapped at the site, but rescue missions are ongoing in an effort to save lives.

The collapse is among the many accidents that have occurred in Nairobi within the last few months.

Three weeks ago, one individual lost his life while several other persons sustained injuries in the collapse of a 22-storey building under construction in Westlands. In the previous month, yet another building fell flat in the South C section of the city, killing two people.

Some engineers have pointed out the increasing incidences and attributed it to laxity in enforcing the building codes, besides the negligence of some developers.

There have been instances where officials from the Kenya Institute of Engineers raised alarm about the lack of adequate supervision as well as following proper construction guidelines, hence endangering people’s lives.

In light of the ongoing efforts by rescue crews in Kibera, there have been numerous calls for stricter monitoring of collapsed buildings.
