Senators have expressed concern that some governors are still missing sessions of the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) and the County Public Investments Committee (CPIC) without any explanation.
The said some even dared to question the very role of the House in overseeing the use of public funds, warning that such an attitude will only serve to weaken the House’s role.
When addressing the Senate Liaison Committee retreat in Mombasa, Deputy Speaker Senator Kathuri Murungi said that the governors who fail to appear before Senate committees in order to avoid being scrutinized will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Murungi further said that the case against the governors is not one that is politically motivated but instead, it is a case that is backed up by the official findings in the reports from the Office of the Auditor-General.
He also said that it is a constitutional duty of the Senate to check that there is proper accountability when it comes to the use of county resources and that governors must be held individually responsible for how public funds has been spent in their counties.
The MPs further rebuffed the moves by some governors who are trying to hide behind the Council of Governors as a means of avoiding appearing before the Senate oversight committees.
The lawmakers further emphasized that the responsibility of county finances rests with each governor personally and they must not try to evade their duty. Senator Moses Kajwang is a Chairperson of Senate County Public
