The Senate begins impeachment proceedings today, 14th October 2024, against Kericho County Governor Dr. Erick Kipkoech Mutai.
Senators evaluate various charges brought against the Governor, including gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office, and gross misconduct.
The two-day session kicks off with a closed pre-hearing meeting for Senators from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Following this, the County Assembly of Kericho presents its case, detailing allegations of misappropriation of county revenue and failure to implement automated revenue collection systems, which leads to significant financial losses for the County.
Additional accusations include illegal appointments and dismissals, violations of the Public Finance Management Act, and misuse of funds raised for victims of the Londiani accident tragedy.
The Governor also faces allegations of leading an extravagant lifestyle while overseeing an administration plagued by procurement irregularities and tender manipulation.
Furthermore, claims of abuse of office extend to improper directives that undermine the oversight role of the County Assembly.
Tomorrow, 15th October, Governor Mutai’s legal team presents their defence, featuring witness testimonies, cross-examinations, and closing statements throughout the day.
The proceedings culminate in a debate among lawmakers and a voting session in the evening, where Senators decide whether to uphold or reject the County Assembly’s motion for the removal of Dr. Mutai from office by impeachment.
