Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been declared the winner of the disputed presidential poll.

In a statement released on Saturday, November 1, the Tanzanian Electoral Commission declared Suluhu the winner after garnering 31.9 million votes, which is 97.66% of the total votes cast.

Her closest challenger, Salum Mwalimu, of CHAUMU party, got 213,414 votes, representing 0.65% of the total votes cast.

The elections, held on Wednesday, October 29, saw key opposition figures barred from the ballot, including Tundu Lissu, who is in prison facing treason charges.

The country’s young generation has since taken to the streets to protest against what they term as Suluhu’s maladministration.
