President William Ruto hosted AFC Leopards at State House, Nairobi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to elevating sports into a pillar of the national economy, which will will empower the youth.

At the event, the President handed them Ksh 10 million, directing that Ksh 5 million to be shared among the players, while the other Ksh 5 million to be used to recruit new players ahead of the new 2026/27 season.

“I will give them Ksh 10 million. Players will get Ksh 5 million to sort themselves out and the other Ksh 5 million they can sign in new players so that these players can get something to take home,” Ruto said.

President Ruto stated that sports must be treated not as recreation but as a serious industry capable of creating jobs and shaping global influence.

“We will not only enjoy sports, but we have chosen the deliberate path that sports will be treated as serious business. It is the reason why we are hosting AFCON and looking at the future where we can host global events,” he said.

AFC Leopards, with over six decades of history, has faced financial challenges and competitive struggles, yet has remained the pillar of Kenyan football culture.

Ruto praised the team’s ability to overcome adversity, noting their recent climb in the league standings and encouraging them to aim for silverware this coming season.

“You were number eight and you have moved up and you have promises to get the cups this season,” Ruto said.

He assured that the government is transforming stadiums into economic hubs , saying the upcoming Talanta sports stadium would feature commercial facilities with gyms, commercial spaces and modern amenities- an infrastructure that will boost sports.

President Ruto pledged that the government will support AFC Leopards in improving its training facilities, a request made by the team.
