President William Ruto has commissioned the first phase of the Kapyego Water Project in Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to clean water for households, livestock and irrigation.

The project, valued at Ksh 350 million, is designed to serve 12,000 households upon completion, with phase two is currently under construction.

The Kapyego Water Project is expected to transform lives in Elgeyo Marakwet, with residents set to benefit from a reliable access to clean water.

The water project will also reduce the dependence on seasonal rivers and rain-fed sources, a project that will enhance food security, improve health outcomes and ease the burden on women and children who often walk long distances to fetch water.

President Ruto has emphasized the Kapyego initiative is part of a broader national strategy to address water shortages across the nation.

Through the National Infrastructure Fund, the government plans to construct, 50 mega dams, 200 medium dams and 1,000 micro dams across the country that will ensure sustainable domestic water supply in both rural and urban areas.

During the commissioning, President Ruto highlighted the importance of equitable development, noting that water projects are not just about infrastructure but about dignity and opportunity.

“Access to water is fundamental right. By investing in projects like Kapyego, we are ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of where they live, has the resources they need to thrive,” Ruto said.

Local leaders and residents have welcomed the project, describing it as a long- awaited intervention that will uplift the communities and reduce conflict.
