President William Ruto on Sunday stunned many after gifting Bishop Benjamin Kalanzo a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a gesture that has set off a storm of political speculation and debate.
The dramatic moment unfolded during the installation ceremony of Bishop Benjamin Kalanzo at AIC Bomani Church in Machakos County on July 20, 2025, where the President personally handed over the car keys in front of a jubilant congregation.
The luxury SUV, valued at over KSh 9 million, was presented amid cheers, but the move has sparked questions about its timing and intention, given Machakos’ political significance as Kalonzo’s stronghold.
Analysts argue the gesture could be a strategic charm offensive aimed at winning Kalonzo’s loyalty ahead of the 2027 elections.
While the Head of State did not publicly frame the gift as political, the symbolism was hard to ignore in a region traditionally aligned with the opposition.
“Ruto is playing high-stakes politics,” said political commentator David Mutua. “Buying Kalonzo such an expensive gift sends a clear message: alliances are shifting.”
Despite the celebration inside the church, the gift has triggered criticism from some locals, who pointed to widespread poverty, drought, and youth unemployment in the region.
“It’s a beautiful car, but maybe a school bus or water project would have helped more people,” said Peter Mutuku, a youth leader.
