Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, has died at 69 after a battle with lung cancer. Her strained relationship with her son was highlighted in several of his famous songs, such as “Cleaning Out My Closet” and “My Name Is.”
Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, often used his music to express anger toward his mother, mentioning her struggles with prescription drugs. Their relationship became even more difficult, leading Nelson to sue her son for defamation in the late 1990s.
However, over time, their relationship improved. Eminem apologized in his 2013 song “Headlights,” and Nelson reconciled with him, attending his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2022.
Nelson, who raised Eminem as a teenager, reflected on their past in her 2008 memoir My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem. Eminem’s representative confirmed her death, but did not reveal further details beyond her battle with cancer.
