Raila Odinga has officially been presented as Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson.

Speaking at the event, Odinga expressed deep gratitude for the support from Kenya and the Eastern Africa region, calling it a significant milestone in his bid for the top AU position.

Odinga reflected on Africa’s complex history, acknowledging both its ancient greatness and the challenges of slavery, colonialism, and internal conflicts.

He emphasized the continent’s resilience and resurgence on the global stage, while also noting the ongoing challenges such as conflicts, hunger, poverty, and youth unemployment.

If elected, Odinga pledged to make the AU more people-centered, focusing on strategic action that benefits the everyday lives of Africans. He plans to prioritize reforms and capacity-building within the AU Commission, working to integrate the continent and eliminate divisions rooted in colonial history.

"My plan is to work with you, Excellencies, and make the AU more people-centered and serve the interests of the vast voiceless majority of Africans. The African people should feel the AU in their lives," said Odinga

Odinga highlighted Africa’s positive economic trajectory, citing a report from the African Development Bank that 11 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies are in Africa.

He expressed his desire to complement the efforts of African leaders in fostering growth and development across the continent.

“Excellencies, throughout my leadership and service to the public, I have noted the significance of defining strategic goals and appreciating the influence of political dynamics on the outcomes of these goals. So, decision-making must be backed by a balance between policy and geopolitics,” added Odinga.

He underscored that his candidacy is not about personal ambition but about serving Africa. He called on fellow East Africans to support his vision as he prepares for the AU elections in February 2025.
