A police officer stationed at the Ng’ombeni Patrol Base in Kwale County was killed by a group of angry youths after he attempted to attack a family in Ziwani.

Police Constable Titus Gaya reportedly left his station unnoticed and went to Mwanaisha Ali’s residence around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Upon gaining access to the house, Gaya tried to assault the family with bows and arrows, causing panic among Ali’s relatives who were alarmed by the unexpected intruder.

Mwanaisha quickly raised the alarm, prompting nearby residents to rush to her aid and subdue the officer.

According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, the mob severely attacked Gaya, who later succumbed to his injuries. Additional officers from Kwale responded to the scene and found Gaya’s body on the floor.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Gaya had recently been struggling with mental health issues.

This tragic incident underscores the growing concern over mental health among police officers, with the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) reporting that approximately 12,000 officers are affected by mental health problems, often exacerbated by their challenging work environment.
