Siaya Governor James Orengo is facing criticism from a section of Kisumu residents who have accused him of undermining President William Ruto and ODM party leader Raila Odinga through what they termed as “unnecessary and divisive remarks.”
Speaking under the Kisumu Progressive Movement, the group condemned Orengo’s comments during the burial of George Oduor, Raila’s longtime bodyguard, held on Saturday.
Micah Herbart, a spokesperson for the movement, said Orengo’s sentiments were ill-timed and disrespectful, especially as they came at a moment when President Ruto and Raila have united in a show of national cohesion.
“President Ruto and Raila have joined forces to unite the country. It was inappropriate for the Governor to use a burial platform to issue such remarks,” said Herbart.

During the funeral, Governor Orengo stated he would not join what he described as the “praise-singing bandwagon” for the current administration—remarks that drew sharp criticism from the group.
Herbart dismissed Orengo’s tone as “unpalatable and unbecoming,” especially for a host governor at a solemn occasion. He further suggested that Orengo’s remarks may have stemmed from frustration over recent appointments of Luo leaders, such as Opiyo Wandayi and John Mbadi, into strategic national roles.
“The Luo community has never felt more included in government. When the state is working with our people, we must embrace it, not sabotage it,” Herbart added.
Jardon Junior, another member of the movement, criticized Orengo’s political approach, branding it as outdated and counterproductive.
“Governor Orengo’s confrontational politics are a relic of the past. We want progress, not rhetoric that has previously cost the lives of our youth,” said Junior.
He emphasized the importance of unity under the leadership of President Ruto and Raila for the successful implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which he said would promote peace and inclusivity nationwide.
“The full implementation of the NADCO report will ensure a safe and politically stable country for all Kenyans,” he noted.
The group pledged unwavering support for the Kenya Kwanza administration and declared their intention to back President Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
“President Ruto has shown he is a friend to the Luo community. We will stand with him and support him at the ballot,” they said.
