The United Opposition has raised alarm over what it terms an elaborate scheme to interfere with Thursday’s by-elections in favour of candidates allied to the government.
Speaking at the Steve Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DCP deputy party leader Rigathi Gachagua, and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa claimed that pre-marked ballot papers had already been dispatched to Mbeere North, Malava, and Magarini constituencies ahead of the polls.
The leaders further alleged that groups of hired goons and police officers in plain clothes had been deployed to polling stations and tallying centres with the intention of causing chaos and facilitating ballot stuffing.
“These reports point to a well-coordinated plan to subvert the will of the people. We will not allow the democratic rights of Kenyans to be violated,” they said.
The coalition is now calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to reassure the country that the mini-polls will be free, fair, and credible. They urged the electoral body to address the allegations urgently and guarantee the integrity of the vote.
The by-elections are scheduled to take place this Thursday across the three constituencies following vacancies declared earlier in the year.
