The upgrading of the 20-kilometre Ololunga–Ewaso Ngiro Road to bitumen standards is expected to transform transport connectivity, boost trade, and improve access to essential services in Narok County.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the initiative is a part of Kenya’s comprehensive plan for a better infrastructure beyond Vision 2030, which would allow for rural economies to come online through the development of solid road networks.
Led by Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), the project is set to connect a rugged Ololunga with Ewaso Ngiro via a smooth asphalt road, which was introduced by President William Ruto in August 2025 during his development round of areas affected most by the situation.
Contractors have begun mobilising heavy machinery for Phase One of the project, ie site clearing, earthworks and structural excavation. The works will transform the existing rugged earth road into an all-weather asphalt corridor.
According to Omollo, the improved road will link Ololunga with Ewaso Ngiro and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, including maize, wheat, dairy products and vegetables, from farming areas to regional markets.
This road shall also facilitate access to an airport site in Narok, promoting the region for leisure activity and tourism as well as for business purposes.
Furthermore, Omollo noted that better roads not only enhance access of citizens to various service sectors but also enable government departments, security services and other related agencies to cover and interact better with the population throughout the area.
