The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is investigating two drivers captured in a viral video allegedly racing luxury cars and overtaking dangerously on the Nairobi Expressway.

In a statement on Monday, October 26, the authority asked members of the public with information about the drivers or their vehicle registration numbers to come forward and assist with the investigations.

The footage, which has sparked reactions on social media, shows a Mercedes-Benz C-Class and a Lamborghini being driven at high speed as they overtake other vehicles on the busy highway.

At some points, the cars appear to come dangerously close to other vehicles while manoeuvring around traffic. Collision-warning alarms can also be heard in the video as occupants react to the driving.

NTSA condemned the conduct, saying it put the lives of the drivers, their passengers and other road users at risk.

“These drivers not only put their own lives at risk, but also endangered passengers and other road users,” the authority said.

It urged anyone who can identify the vehicles through their registration numbers to share the details through its direct messages on social media.

“We will investigate and take immediate, appropriate action,” NTSA added.

Video raises road safety concerns

The footage has drawn calls for the drivers to be identified and held accountable for their actions.

The authority said it was unfortunate that some motorists continued to engage in dangerous behaviour despite ongoing efforts to improve road safety.

The investigation comes as road crashes continue to raise concern among transport authorities following several deadly accidents in recent weeks.

On Sunday, October 25, 25 people were reported dead following a crash along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway at Kanga, near Mtito Andei.

Following the accident, the Ministry of Roads and Transport announced tougher measures aimed at preventing further loss of life on the country’s roads.

NTSA’s latest appeal seeks to establish the identities of the drivers seen in the Expressway footage so that appropriate action can be taken.
