Senator Gloria Orwoba has called for an urgent statement from the Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing regarding the deteriorating safety of passengers in Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) nationwide.

In her request, the Senator emphasized that PSVs remain a critical mode of transport for millions of Kenyans daily.

However, she raised concerns over rising cases of insecurity, including assaults, gender-based harassment, reckless driving, and weak regulation, which have exposed systemic failures in passenger protection.

“A particularly distressing incident involved Ms. Adelle Omondi, who was allegedly drugged, sexually assaulted, and robbed while traveling on a Mash Poa bus from Nairobi to Mombasa on April 14, 2025,” Senator Orwoba disclosed.

“She was later found disoriented at Coast General Hospital, with her belongings missing. This case underscores the urgent need for stronger safeguards, especially for vulnerable passengers like women.”

The Senator has demanded that the Committee provide a detailed assessment of passenger safety and security in PSVs, including reported incidents from January 2025 to date.

She also wants a report on measures implemented by regulatory bodies, such as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), to enhance accountability and safety standards in the sector.

And the specific actions taken by NTSA and other agencies concerning Ms. Omondi’s case, including investigations, enforcement measures, and victim support.

The move comes amid growing public outcry over the safety of commuters, with calls for stricter oversight and swift justice for victims of PSV-related crimes. The Committee is expected to respond within the stipulated parliamentary timelines.
