The National Police Service side with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in celebrating World Press Freedom Day 2026 at Strathmore University and pledged to protect journalists and create a media environment that promotes transparency.
The event was held based on the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace, ” which also corresponds to one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals i. e. Goal 16 which aims at peace, justice, and a strong, accountable, and inclusive institution.
The gathering was graced by the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Kenya, Hon. Isaac Lenaola, who was also the Chief Guest. NPS Director of Corporate Communication and NPS Spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, represented the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
On behalf of IG Kanja, the statement praised MCK for taking the theme of press freedom and extending it to encompass the policing role angle. The Inspector General stressed that the police must not prevent the media in their work but rather the police should be a support to them and protect them while ensuring that the media work within the bounds of the law.
He further said that the rights of the journalists should be fully respected so that they can work without coming across any form of intimidation, harassment, or any restrictions of their rights.
According to Kanja, the Kenya Police Service is heavily focused on media relations, including creating new communication channels that they can use to talk with the public effectively.
Besides making the Police more responsive, the plan also includes the use of social media and other communication platforms. Additionally, the Police officers will be trained in strategic communication, among other things.
At the same time, the Inspector General reiterated the commitment of the Service to professionalism, accountability, and community involvement.
Through this event, various stakeholders such as representatives of the media, judiciary, and law enforcement sectors came together to support press freedom and work towards a peaceful society in which even authority is not above accountability.
