The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a stern warning to politicians engaging in ethnic mobilization and hate speech ahead of the 2027 General Election, vowing to take decisive action against offenders.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, NCIC Chairperson Reverend Dr. Samuel Kobia decried the rising trend of ethnic-based political mobilization, describing it as a threat to national unity.

He emphasized that the commission will not tolerate leaders fanning ethnic tensions for political gain.“We will leave no stone unturned in restoring political sanity in the country. Kenya must not be allowed to slide back into ethnic divisions,” Dr. Kobia stated.

According to the commission, 28 cases are currently under investigation for contraventions of the National Cohesion and Integration Act. These include 15 cases of ethnic contempt, four of hate speech, two of ethnic discrimination, and seven involving both hate speech and ethnic discrimination.

Among the politicians on NCIC’s radar are former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, and Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi. Dr. Kobia warned that the commission will pursue legal action against those found culpable, regardless of their political stature.

In a related development, the NCIC chair lauded President William Ruto for his firm stance against abductions, saying the move is a step in the right direction toward rebuilding public trust in state institutions.

Dr. Kobia reiterated the commission’s commitment to promoting national cohesion and ensuring political tolerance as the country gears up for the next general election.
