Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has firmly criticized President William Ruto’s directive warning that it poses a serious security threat to the country.

The former Rift Valley regional commander, Natembeya described the move as ill-advised, highlighting its potential national security and diplomatic repercussions.

He expressed concerns that the policy change could allow individuals with ties to outlawed terror groups to enter Kenya, obtain identification documents, and even run for elected office.

“This directive has serious security implications. If implemented carelessly, we could end up electing even an MCA from outlawed groups,” Natembeya cautioned.

On February 5, President Ruto signed a proclamation to abolish ID vetting for residents in the Northeastern region, calling it a step toward ending unfair and disenfranchising practices.

However, Natembeya raised alarms over the wider consequences, suggesting that it could allow individuals with criminal affiliations to rise to higher positions, such as governor, MP, or even president.

He further warned that the policy could weaken Kenya’s security forces by enabling criminal elements to infiltrate key institutions.

Natembeya argued that Ruto should have focused on a more cautious approach to border security that would not compromise the safety of Kenyan citizens.

Some political analysts view the decision as part of Ruto’s strategy to create a new voting bloc ahead of the 2027 General Election.
