Kenyan comedian and content creator Nasra Yusuf has caused an online frenzy after she called out Kenyans for over-celebrating every time international celebrities acknowledge local artists or content.
In a viral Instagram story, Nasra ranted about the reaction of some Kenyans when foreign stars interact with Kenyan content on social media.
“I feel like a country we should now stop celebrating such minor and irrelevant things like ‘Justin Bieber liked Nasra’s post’ alafu mnaenda mnajaza flag ya Kenya hapo,” she wrote, adding laughing emojis to convey her disbelief.
Nasra went on to point out the irony of how Kenyan fans react, especially when foreign artists repost or engage with local musicians typically for promotional purposes.
“Msanii wetu mkubwa sana anavibe kwa ngoma ya msanii wa majuu alafu huyo msanii anarepost because anapush ngoma yake, then sisi bila aibu tunaenda tunajaza flag ya Kenya hapo,” she stated.
The comedian urged Kenyans to maintain perspective and self-respect, saying it’s time to stop glorifying such minor international acknowledgments.
“Kama hamjiheshimu, muheshemu flag pls,” she added humorously, ending her rant with playful emojis.
Nasra’s remarks have divided opinion online. While some of her followers agreed that Kenyans do overhype foreign validation, others felt that her words came across as dismissive of moments that bring the country together in celebration.
