At least 13 people have lost their lives in a grisly road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway involving a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu and a trailer.
The accident occurred in the Elementaita area near Kipopey in Gilgil, Nakuru county, on the morning of Sunday, September 28.
Confirming the accident, Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru said the fourteen-seater matatu was headed to Nakuru when it collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck.
Thirteen people died on the spot, with three others sustaining serious injuries. The victims had hired the matatu from Nairobi for a family function.
Preliminary investigation showed that the PSV matatu was overtaking moments before the fatal crash.
The fatalities were rushed to Gilgil Sub-county Mortuary and the seriously injured were rushed to a Gilgil hospital.
