Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination Dennis Itumbi and comedian Dr Ofweneke were among personalities who took part in a short race during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret.
The light-hearted contest brought together government officials, personalities from the creative industry and other participants at Kipchoge Keino Stadium on Tuesday, October 20.
The race formed part of the celebrations hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, with President William Ruto presiding over the national event.
Event commentators Michael Gitonga and Chipukeezy introduced some of the participants before the race began, highlighting the mix of government officials and sporting talent on the track.
“Who is going to win this race?” Gitonga asked as he named some of the participants, including Murkomen and Treasury PS Kiptoo.
Chipukeezy also pointed out Tapet Kimutai, a former world junior record-holder in the 800-metre race, who was wearing bib number 2378.
The commentator noted that Kimutai had worn the same number during the Sydney Olympics, adding an athletics connection to the contest.
Other participants mentioned during the commentary included Mike Okinyi of Citizen TV and PS Fikirini Jacobs.
As the participants prepared to start, Chipukeezy jokingly called for ambulances to be nearby, drawing attention to the presence of seasoned athletes alongside participants from other professions.
“On your marks… set… go!” he announced before the race began.
The contest added a lighter moment to the national celebrations, which brought together leaders, athletes, artists and members of the public to honour Kenyans who have contributed to the country’s development.
This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations placed particular emphasis on sports, security and the economy, with Eldoret’s reputation as a home of champions providing a fitting backdrop for the event.
The race also offered a glimpse of the informal activities that accompanied the official programme at the stadium.
