The Ministry of Health’s three-day sensitization workshop on drug and substance abuse in Kakamega County concluded today with a public baraza that brought together key stakeholders from across the Western region.

The forum attracted representatives from the National Government, County Governments, organizations working in drug and substance abuse control, and members of the public.

Discussions centered on the growing threat of drug and substance abuse, with particular focus on the rising use of novel tobacco and nicotine products.

Presenting worrying statistics, speakers highlighted high levels of marijuana and chang’aa abuse in the region, pointing to an urgent need for strengthened enforcement measures, increased community engagement, and comprehensive policy interventions.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Naomi Shaaban, Chairperson of the Tobacco Control Board, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the drug menace.

“Tackling drug and substance abuse requires a multi-sectoral approach. We must strengthen policies, raise awareness, and empower communities to safeguard the health and future of our youth,” she said.

Mrs. Christine Chacha, Deputy County Commissioner of Kakamega Central, echoed these sentiments, calling for unity in the fight against drug abuse.

“The government remains committed to supporting initiatives that protect our communities. However, we cannot win this fight alone—parents, teachers, and community leaders must play an active role,” she urged.

The sensitization workshop and public forum mark a significant step in addressing drug-related challenges in Kakamega and the broader Western region.
