Saumu Mbuvi, the daughter of Mike Sonko has opened up about her personal struggles with mental health in an emotional and honest message that captured the attention of many Kenyans online.
She took to social media to reveal that she has been fighting bipolar disorder, a condition she says has tested her strength and faith over the years. She further clarified that, contrary to circulating rumors, she has never battled drug addiction and was never in rehab for substance use her journey was about seeking help for her mental health, not addiction.
“Yes, I’ve battled bipolar disorder, a condition which has tested me in ways words can hardly explain. But what I have never battled is drug addiction. I was never in rehab for that. I sought help for my mental health because I was fighting to find myself again,” she wrote.
She went on to express how painful it can be being judged or misunderstood, most especially by those very close to her, but still emphasized that from her experience, she learned to find strength in her vulnerability.
“It hurts to be shamed for trying to heal. It hurts even more when that shame comes from your own blood. But I have learned that pain can be sacred, it awakens a strength you didn’t know you had.
In a message of hope and resilience, she encouraged anyone fighting mental health challenges to not feel ashamed or broken, reminding them that it’s okay to seek help.
“I may be bruised, but I am not destroyed. My story isn’t one of shame; it’s one of survival, courage, and faith.”
Her openness has sparked conversations about mental health awareness and the importance of compassion even towards public figures who are often judged harshly. As she proceeds with her healing process, her courage stands in reminder that it’s okay not to be okay.
