Michael Carrick has agreed to take over as Manchester United’s interim head coach, with former England assistant Steve Holland set to serve as his deputy.

Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion will also form part of Carrick’s backroom team.

The former United and England midfielder reached an agreement on Monday night, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday once paperwork is completed.

United dismissed Ruben Amorim on 5 January after 14 months in charge, with Darren Fletcher stepping in as caretaker for two matches.

Carrick will be in the dugout for Saturday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old previously oversaw a three-game spell as United’s temporary manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure in 2021.

Holland, who worked closely with Gareth Southgate during his time with England and enjoyed significant success at Chelsea, joins after being dismissed by Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos in April, just four months into his tenure.

Woodgate previously worked under Carrick at Middlesbrough, while former United defender Evans returns to the club in a coaching role. Binnion is already part of United’s existing staff.

Carrick impressed chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox during face-to-face talks last Thursday, outlining a clear vision that includes a switch to a 4-2-3-1 system, moving away from Amorim’s three-at-the-back approach.

Although Solskjaer also held discussions with the club, Carrick was chosen for his more hands-on coaching style.

Fletcher, who oversaw matches against Burnley and Brighton, will now return to his role with the Under-18s.
