Mercy Oketch set a new national record in the women’s 400m during the sixth edition of the Absa Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour held on Saturday at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Oketch, a member of Team Kenya’s bronze-winning mixed relay squad at the recent World Relays in Guangzhou, China, clocked an impressive 50.14 seconds, smashing the previous record of 50.67 set by Mary Moraa in 2023.

Her victory not only earned her a place in the history books but also secured her qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September — marking her debut at the global event.

Uganda’s Leni Shida finished second in 50.93 seconds, while Kenya’s Mercy Chebet claimed third with a personal best of 51.52.
