A matatu driver accused of causing a fatal accident along Enterprise Road, Nairobi, while performing reckless “Manyoka” stunts has been arrested in Malindi after evading authorities for two months.
The arrest brings closure to case that shocked the nation and reignited debate over road safety and accountability in Kenya’s public transport sector.
Witnesses reported that the driver was engaging in dangerous stunts, commonly referred to as “Manyoka” when the matatu lost control, leading to tragic crash. Reports indicate that either four people lost their lives in the accident.
The driver, who is accused of being behind the wheel when it overturned on June 4, is expected to be arraigned in court and charged to reckless driving, the death of the four passengers and violations of traffic laws.
After being on the run for two months, the driver was tracked and found in Malindi, as it is expected that justice for the victims and their families is prevail.
Families of the victims had earlier protested the delay in taking action. For now, they hope for justice, accountability and closure as the case proceeds to court.
The arrest comes amid concerns from police about some motorists are engaging in reckless driving who endanger the lives of passengers.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has been under pressure to implement reforms that balance efficiency with safety.
