Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has moved to court seeking Sh70 million in damages from Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula over what he terms as grave, malicious and defamatory statements made against him in public.
Speaking after instructing his legal team, led by city lawyer Danstan Omari, Nabwera said the lawsuit arises from what he described as unprovoked verbal attacks by the Deputy Governor, which he says have severely damaged his reputation and personal dignity.
According to Nabwera, the first case centres on allegations by Savula branding him a “murderer,” a claim the MP says is false, reckless and intended to incite public hatred against him.
The second suit relates to claims allegedly made by the Deputy Governor regarding Nabwera’s HIV status. The MP dismissed the allegations as not only defamatory but also a gross violation of his right to privacy and human dignity.
In a dramatic twist, Nabwera has challenged Savula to submit to a public HIV test, insisting that both of them undergo the test openly before the High Court of Kenya, in the presence of certified medical experts.
“I want this matter handled transparently and conclusively. Let the truth be established publicly and professionally,” Nabwera said, maintaining that the allegations were meant to politically and personally destroy him.
The case is expected to test the limits of political speech, defamation law, and personal rights, as tensions within Kakamega’s political leadership spill from the public arena into the courtroom.
Neither the Deputy Governor nor his legal team had issued an official response to the claims by the time of publication.
