Lilian Ng’ang’a, the former Machakos First Lady, has raised eyebrows on social media after issuing a public comment on the rising use of wigs by women. On her Instagram Story, Lilian told women to “ease up on wearing wigs,” claiming that even with having good makeup and good dressing, a shoddily done wig can destroy the entire look.

Her message, with a touch of humor and emoji, was blunt. “Abandon, please. It’s too much! ” she wrote, very much driving home her point. While some social media responders appreciated her honesty and agreed that not every wig is worn with care and attention to detail, others felt that her statements could be interpreted as insensitive or critical.

In a society where hair is a deeply personal issue, her comment has generated approval and outrage. Wigs are employed for innumerable purposes including convenience, fashion, protective styling, or medical necessity so for many women, they are more than an accessory.

As a public figure, Lilian’s words carry weight and have sparked discussions around beauty, authenticity, and the expectation of women to remain perfect at all times. Despite the differing opinions, her words have brought about a wider debate on what women choose to do with their looks and how those choices are critiqued
