The Kenya Wildlife Service has dismissed claims of destruction of Nairobi National Park, saying that information circulating online is false.
In a statement, KWS said that claims of forest areas being destroyed in Nairobi National Park by a group on social media were false.
The agency said that what is currently being done is moving and upgrading the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, which has been in existence for a long time.
KWS said that currently, the orphanage is no longer sufficient, given that over the years, the number of animals and visitors has increased.
“Due to increasing visitor numbers and growing demand for wildlife rescue, the current facility no longer meets modern requirements,” KWS said.
KWS said that moving the orphanage was not a new thing, given that it has been in discussion for a long period of time.
They explained that moving the orphanage will also create jobs, given that over 500 young people will benefit from it.
The upgraded orphanage will be able to accommodate more animals, given that there will be space for animals, a wildlife hospital, and areas for rearing young animals.
KWS also stated that visitors will be able to enjoy better services such as improved paths, resting places, and parking.
The new location will be set near the Bomas International Convention Centre for ease of access for visitors.
At the same time, the existing orphanage located in the park will be restored to its natural state.
KWS claimed that they have adhered to all necessary approvals in implementing this project, which is aimed at improving conservation and not destroying the park.
