Police in Sololo, Marsabit County, have seized marijuana worth Ksh.10.5 million in a major operation near the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

The bust happened on Monday morning in the Elle Bor area, where officers intercepted a Toyota Land Cruiser carrying 12 sacks of bhang weighing about 350 kilograms.

Sololo OCPD Joseph Nthiga confirmed the arrest, saying the vehicle was impounded along with the consignment. He added that the driver, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

“We have arrested the driver who is very young, just 27. We have impounded the car and the consignment which will be used as exhibit,” he said.

The suspect injured his leg during the arrest and was taken to hospital for treatment. He will be taken into custody once he is discharged.

Sololo Sub-county Deputy Commissioner Edward Goko applauded the officers for their swift action. He also urged the government to increase the number of security personnel deployed at the border, especially Kenya Police Reservists, to help curb the growing trend of cross-border drug trafficking.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in securing Kenya’s northern borders, which are often used by traffickers to smuggle illegal goods into the country.
