The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a waiver of penalties and interest for taxpayers who were unable to file their income tax returns on time due to technical hitches on the iTax system on June 30, 2025.
In a public notice issued by the Commissioner General, KRA acknowledged the overwhelming number of Kenyans who turned out in large numbers to meet the annual tax filing deadline for the year ending December 31, 2024.
The authority lauded the public’s patriotism and trust in the country’s tax administration. The tax authority confirmed that a system overload on the final day disrupted access to return filing and payment services, leaving many taxpayers unable to submit their returns on time.“Cognisant of the challenges faced by taxpayers and in line with Section 89 (5a)(b) of the Tax Procedures Act, KRA assures the public that we will waive any interest or penalties that may accrue due to late filing,” the statement reads.
The waiver will apply to all returns filed by July 5, 2025, effectively extending the deadline by five days.KRA is now urging all taxpayers who are yet to file to take advantage of this extension and submit their returns and any due taxes via itax.kra.go.ke before the new deadline.
This move comes as a relief to thousands of Kenyans who were left frustrated by the system’s downtime during the final hours of the filing period.
